R+D+i
(Research,
Development and Innovation)
The R+D+i department of the Consorci, works on the implementation of the
best available technologies and the research of new technologies. This enables
the continuous improvement of wastewater treatment technologies and sanitation
systems. The final objective is to achieve the fixed requirements for present
and future water courses.
The
research and developments tasks are generally done in collaboration with:
other administrations responsible for sanitation infrastructures, industries
specialized in this field, research centres and universities.
The
main research lines of the Consorci are:

Implementation of new technologies to improve the wastewater treatment
systems.

Implementation of new tools, control systems and optimization
systems to collect, treat and dispose of wastewater correctly.

Implementation of new, real time measures and controls.
-
Development of decision support systems and information management
systems.
-
Planning of reused wastewater within the Consorci administration
area.

description: Development and implementation of a control
system for nitrification, denitrification and biological phosphorus
removal. For batch operating systems, which guarantee the removal
of nutrients in real time, and optimize the energy consumption of
the aeration systems.
The project has been implemented in four WWTPs of the Consorci, with
different configurations, treatment lines and aeration systems. The
aim is to obtain a control system applicable in any WWTP with batch
operation.

description: A balanced study comparing the efficiency of two
shaking systems from the anaerobic digesters of the La Llagosta WWTP,
through the calculation of the detention time by means of a tracer.
The main objectives of this study are:

Comparison of two shaking systems: (1) mechanical shaking system (SCABA)
and (2) sequential biogas shaking system.
- Quantify the stratification degree in the digesters and identify the
causes of scum formation and stratification.

description: This project aims to outline the planning of reused
wastewater for different uses, where this water resource is suitable,

etc.).
- Industrial uses (production processes, cooling processes, etc.).

description: The projects developed for the implementation of
knowledge-based Decision Support Systems (DSSs) into different WWTPs (Granollers,
La Llagosta, Caldes de Montbui and La Garriga). The projects are a key
factor to the development of a DSS at river basin scale. These systems
have provided heuristic knowledge and learning capabilities for managing
complex systems, like WWTPs. DSS are able to process information from
different sources (sensors, qualitative data, etc.), diagnose the WWTP
state and provide actuations in real time.

description: The project is focused on the development, at pilot
scale, of strategies for the operation of thermopile anaerobic digestion
processes, and different sludge pre-treatments, which has fulfilled the
Directive applicable to WWTP sludge into agriculture and other uses. Full
scale tests have been done in Montornès del Vallès WWTP,
and some pre-treatments have provided better results than other pilot
studies.

description: The project focuses on the study of the configuration
(geometry, size and matrix properties) of subsurface flow constructed
wetlands, for wastewater secondary treatment of small communities (less
than 2.000 population equivalent). Nowadays this facility acts as a secondary
treatment for a community of 200 inhabitants.
