The Besòs basin , with a surface of 1038 Km2, is framed between mountain ranges the Pre-Litoral and the Litoral, although most of its surface is developed within the Vallès depression.

The culminating points of the dividing of waters are: the Pla de la Calma (1350 m) and the Tagamanent (1055 m) in the Montseny; La Mola (1100 m) and the Montcau (1035 m) in Sant Llorenç de Munt; Tibidabo (512 m) in Collserola and El Corredor (634 m).

Most of the courses of the Besòs basin are born in the southern part of the mountain range the Pre-Litoral forming the main axis of which is formed by the fluvial courses of the Congost and Besòs, to which they are united by the left margin the Mogent and the right margin the Tenes, Riera de Caldes and the Ripoll. The accumulated length of the rivers of the conca it is of 530 km.

The basin has typically Mediterranean hidrologic regime with very low low water volumes, of the order of 2m³/seg. in the opening, that is gotten to multiply but of 1.000 times with autumn storms.

The basin is deficit in hydraulic resources. It import from the Ter-Llobregat system the two third parts of the water that consumes.

There are two important water-bearing: The Tray of the Llagosta and the Delta of the Besòs with a 110 Hm³ of capacity.

Considering that the basin is small, it presents a great diversity of habitats, with three atmospheres differentiated clearly:

  • the mountain, that surrounds conca with spaces of natural interest (:Collserola, Sant Llorenç de Munt, Cingles de Bertí, the Montseny and the coastal Mountain range).
  • the flat ones of the Vallès, with important and continuously an increasing urban and industrial implantation, and
  • the opening, that has a totally urban air within the metropolitan area of Barcelona

The agricultural activity that was predominant until the decade of the 60, occupying most of the ground available, has opened the way to the industry, which little by little it has been occupying the dedicated ground to agriculture, specially the one of irrigated land and in individual the located one near the rivers.

It is the crossing site of important routes of communication that are located near the rivers, with the lines of train of Barcelona-Puigcerdà and Barcelona-La Jonquera, autovia C-17 and the A-7 freeway.

The Besòs basin is the most habitated of Catalunya, with but of 2 million inhabitants who are tributary
